This seminar is an introduction to general accounting, bookkeeping and finance practices with a specific focus on the wine industry. In this course, students will be introduced to general accounting concepts and how they relate to some of the unique issues of the wine industry. Students will learn how to read, interpret and improve the financial results of a winery using the case study method, and by completing group and individual activities. Attendees will gain new perspectives on the drivers of financial success in the wine industry and how to impact them.

Topics covered include:

·         Key Accounting Terms

·         Understanding Financial Statements

·         Accounting Tools

·         Drivers of Financial Performance

·         Aligning Actions with Financial Results

·         Outsourcing the Accounting Function

Prerequisite: Managing by the Numbers by Chuck Kremer (It is highly recommended that students familiarize themselves with this text in advance of the workshop, especially for those with less experience in the finance & accounting fields.)
