As the host of The Daily Show, the Comedy Central series that addresses the news from a humorous perspective, Trevor Noah holds a powerful satirical and analytical position in American political issues. Yet Trevor Noah was born in South Africa to a white father and South African (Xhosa) mother during the regime of apartheid--literally, as his autobiography is titled, "Born a Crime."  This course will examine the intersection of comedy, political discourse, and "race" exemplified by The Daily Show.  A range of media outlets will also be employed to explore international and "racial" perspectives on current events, mass media, and the nature of "truth."  This class may be taken as either LIBS 320A or LIBS 320C.
