This course is designed to prepare participants in fencing practice, pedagogy, and coaching. Fencing is one of the oldest physical training disciplines and it develops in its practitioners an exceptionally high level of mental and physical training, tactical skills, and rapid reflex responses.
The class will provide participants personal and group training designed to explore the historical roots of modern fencing, as well as an in-depth analysis of the traditional Italian school of fencing. Classroom activities will include group and individual exercises, group and individual training in fencing fundamental skills, advanced and intermediate drills, and bouting practice. The main goal is to help the participant learn a system of pedagogy for teaching all of the above to their own students of every level of accomplishment from beginner to advanced competitor.
The Sonoma State University Fencing Pedagogy Certificate Program is one of only a few teacher’s training programs offered by institutions of higher learning in the United States. Successful students will gain the opportunity to test for accreditation at the level of Instructor, Provost, or Master. Testing is not required and students are welcome to repeat the course as needed to build their skills.
